The main action to this drug is that it deals with gout flare ups by lowering the uric acid levels in the blood. It was originally developed to treat a couple of very rare diseases. This drug is also a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, similar to another gout drug, allopurinol. This means it can be used in people who, for whatever reason, cannot tolerate allopurinol nor have too many side effects from it.
