The Different Types Of Aquarium Sand

July 27th, 2010 . by admin

Different types of sand have their own pros and cons. You have to make sure that the sand you will use is actually compatible with the fish tank environment. Here are some types of sand that you may use for your aquarium:

Black Beauty

If you do not have Tanganyikan sandsifters in your aquarium, you may go for Black Beauty. It is affordable and is actually being used for sand blasting. This particular material, however, is not technically sand. It is powdered iron slag. If you are comfortable with the idea, you can get this affordable type.

Silica

If you want gorgeous, but affordable tan-colored sand then you better pick silica sand. The coloring is light and uniform. Despite the nice look, it is also used as blasting sand much like Black Beauty.

Play sand

As the name suggests, this is the sort of sand you find in play areas. It does offer good substrate to fish if you care to rinse the material properly. It is darker than silica, but the coloring is not always uniform.

If you can afford to pay more for aquarium sand, you may also consider coral sand and aragonite. Both can adjust the ph and the hardness of water. While coral sand is usually white, aragonite comes in various colors.
